Description

Pillow Wad Barley Straw 2kg – Soft, Unchopped Small-Animal Bedding

Pillow Wad Barley Straw 2kg provides soft, golden bedding for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals. The longer, unchopped pieces are ideal for nesting and burrowing, while the straw is dust extracted and sieved before packing.

Barley straw has a naturally soft texture compared with many other cereal straws. Therefore, it can help create a comfortable and cosy sleeping area inside hutches and enclosures.

Grown and Harvested Near the Pillow Wad Farm

Pillow Wad grows and harvests its barley straw on its own farm or within approximately two miles. This allows the company to control the crop from the field through to the finished pack.

Each harvest is stamped with its date and field of origin. As a result, the straw has complete traceability from the growing crop to the packaged bedding.

The barley is harvested during the summer before being stored and cared for on-site. Consequently, Pillow Wad can supply naturally golden straw throughout the year.

Dust Extracted and Sieved

Before packing, the barley straw passes through Pillow Wad’s specially designed dust-extraction and sieving process. This removes as much loose dust and unwanted debris as possible.

However, straw is a completely natural, field-grown product. Therefore, its precise colour, texture and stem length may vary slightly between packs. Occasional natural field material may also remain despite careful processing.

Always check natural bedding before use and remove anything unsuitable. Stop using any straw that appears damp, mouldy or has an unusual smell.

Longer Straw for Nesting and Burrowing

This barley straw is supplied unchopped rather than being processed into finely chopped bedding. Therefore, it retains longer strands that small animals can arrange around their sleeping area.

Rabbits and guinea pigs can carry, move and burrow beneath the straw. This allows them to express natural nesting and digging behaviours while creating a comfortable resting space.

The straw can also provide an insulating layer during cooler weather. However, outdoor pets must still have a dry, weatherproof and draught-protected sleeping area.

How to Use Barley Straw Bedding

Place a generous layer of Pillow Wad Barley Straw inside your pet’s sleeping or nesting area. For improved moisture control, it can be placed over a suitable absorbent bedding material.

Check the bedding every day and remove any wet or heavily soiled areas. In addition, replace the full bedding layer regularly to keep the enclosure clean, fresh and comfortable.

Store unused straw in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place. Keep it away from moisture and direct sunlight, and close the pack between uses.

Bedding, Not a Replacement for Feeding Hay

Although pets may occasionally nibble barley straw, it is primarily sold as bedding. Straw does not provide the same nutritional value as good-quality feeding hay.

Therefore, rabbits and guinea pigs must still have constant access to suitable feeding hay. Fresh, clean drinking water should also be available at all times.

For additional information about its production and packaging, visit the official Pillow Wad Barley Straw product page.

Home-Compostable Packaging

Current Pillow Wad Barley Straw packs use fully home-compostable packaging. Therefore, the packaging can be disposed of according to the composting instructions printed on the pack.

Clean, used straw can also be composted where suitable. However, always follow your local guidance when disposing of animal bedding and waste.
