At The Hay Hutch, we make our Timothy hay pellets in small batches using nothing but carefully selected dried Timothy grass. They contain no fillers, binders, sweeteners or other added ingredients. As a result, they provide a simple and natural complementary forage for rabbits, guinea pigs and other hay-eating small animals.

First, we select good-quality dried Timothy grass for each batch. Next, we chop the grass into smaller pieces before compressing it under high pressure. The hay then forms firm, easy-to-handle pellets.

Because the grass naturally holds together, we do not need to add molasses, starch, grain or another binding ingredient. Finally, we inspect each batch before packing it for our customers.

A Simple, Naturally Fibrous Ingredient

Timothy grass naturally provides plenty of fibre. In addition, it generally contains less protein and calcium than richer forage plants such as alfalfa.

However, these Timothy hay pellets differ from complete rabbit or guinea pig nuggets. They do not contain added vitamins, minerals or other ingredients designed to create a complete food. Instead, they offer a convenient way to add the natural taste and aroma of Timothy grass to your pet’s existing diet.

Helpful for Reluctant Hay Eaters

Some customers tell us that their pets will happily nibble our pure hay pellets even when they show little interest in loose hay. For example, a selective eater may find the compact shape and concentrated grassy aroma more appealing.

Therefore, the pellets can provide an additional source of fibrous Timothy grass for reluctant hay eaters. However, they do not provide the same extended chewing and foraging experience as long-stem hay. For this reason, always use them alongside loose feeding hay rather than as a complete replacement.

Different Ways to Serve Timothy Hay Pellets

You can place the pellets in a bowl or offer a small portion by hand. Alternatively, scatter them around your pet’s enclosure to encourage searching and foraging.

You can also place the pellets inside a suitable forage toy. In addition, try mixing them with dried leaves and botanicals to create a more varied activity.

If your pet prefers softer food, you can add a little warm water to create a simple hay mash. Because damp food can spoil, remove any uneaten mash promptly.

Introduce Timothy hay pellets gradually alongside your pet’s usual diet. Also, make sure fresh drinking water and unlimited long-stem hay remain available at all times.
