Description

Meadow Hay Pellets – A Natural Blend of Pure Hay

At The Hay Hutch, we make our Meadow hay pellets from a natural blend of our Devon Meadow Hay and Orchard Hay. They contain no fillers, binders, sweeteners or other added ingredients. Therefore, these pure hay pellets provide a simple complementary forage for rabbits, guinea pigs and other hay-eating small animals.

A Varied Blend of Meadow and Orchard Hay

Unlike a single-grass pellet, this recipe brings together the different grasses found in our Meadow Hay with our leafy Orchard Hay. Orchard Hay, which people also know as cocksfoot, adds another natural grass variety to the blend.

As a result, the pellets offer a different taste and aroma from our single-grass Timothy pellets. The varied hay mixture can also add interest to your pet’s existing diet.

We do not add fruit, botanical flavourings or other ingredients to these pellets. Instead, every pellet contains only chopped and compressed hay.

Made by Us in Small Batches

First, we select the dried Meadow and Orchard Hays for each batch. Next, we chop the hay into smaller pieces. We then use high pressure to compress the chopped hay into firm pellets.

Because the hay naturally holds together, we do not need to add molasses, starch, grain or another binding ingredient. Finally, we inspect each batch before packing it for our customers.

You can learn more about the process in our guide explaining how we make our pure and flavoured hay pellets.

Another Option for Reluctant Hay Eaters

Some customers tell us that their pets enjoy pure hay pellets even when they show little interest in loose hay. The compact shape and concentrated grassy aroma may appeal to selective eaters.

Therefore, Meadow hay pellets can offer an additional way to include fibrous grass hay in your pet’s diet. However, they do not provide the same extended chewing and natural foraging experience as long-stem hay.

For this reason, continue offering unlimited loose feeding hay alongside the pellets. Our Devon Meadow Hay provides the same type of natural grass variety in a long-stem form.

If your rabbit or guinea pig suddenly stops eating hay, eats less than normal or produces fewer droppings, seek veterinary advice promptly.

Ways to Serve Meadow Hay Pellets

You can place a measured portion in your pet’s usual feeding bowl. Alternatively, scatter the pellets around a clean enclosure to encourage searching and natural foraging.

For example, you could hide a few pellets inside a suitable forage toy or cardboard tube. You can also mix them with dried leaves and other suitable forage to create a more varied activity.

If your pet prefers softer food, add a little warm water to create a simple hay mash. However, remove any uneaten damp food promptly.

Introduce Meadow hay pellets gradually alongside your pet’s existing diet. In addition, always provide plenty of fresh drinking water.

Complementary Forage, Not Complete Food

These pure hay pellets differ from complete rabbit or guinea pig nuggets. They do not contain added vitamins or minerals. Instead, they provide a convenient form of complementary grass forage.

Although the pellets contain fibrous hay, they should not replace long-stem feeding hay. Loose hay encourages pets to graze for longer and provides the sustained chewing action their teeth require.

For a single-grass alternative, try our 100% pure Timothy Hay Pellets.

Naturally Different from Batch to Batch

Meadow Hay contains a seasonal mixture of different grasses. Therefore, the precise colour, aroma and appearance of the pellets may vary between batches.

However, these natural changes do not mean that we have altered the recipe. Every batch still contains the same simple combination of Meadow Hay and Orchard Hay.

Store the pellets in a cool, dry place. Also, keep the bag securely closed between uses.

Four Useful Bag Sizes

We offer our Meadow Hay Pellets in four sizes, so you can choose the most practical quantity for your pets:

  • 500g bag – a useful trial size
  • 1.5kg bag – suitable for regular use
  • 5kg bag – a larger, economical option
  • 12kg bag – ideal for multiple pets or frequent use

Therefore, you can start with a smaller bag or choose a larger size for better value and fewer repeat orders.
